As the oldest child, I became my siblings’ “storyteller,” spinning yarns (usually about us) for their amusement. Somehow, word got around. Their enthusiasm followed me to school, where my fourth-grade teacher (having heard) invited me to share. This went over so well that it became a Friday afternoon ritual: if the class behaved, it could expect to hear yet another “chapter” of my (embellished) family narrative. The book you’re holding likely has roots in those tale-telling days.

Many “angel helpers” have contributed over the years in various ways – with inspiration, encouragement, support, and love. Gratitude beyond measure goes to my sister, Brenda. She has been the most fervent advocate for this story – never letting me give up on the idea of its publication. To this end, she presented me with the beautiful painting that has become the front cover, and then she went on to produce all the delightful illustrations.

My sister, Margie, deserves credit for helping me overcome a severe writer’s block case. Her insightful suggestions got me back on track.

John Gargrave, believing in this project and as a surprise to us, organized all the disorganized computer pages and painting prints to make “preliminary books.” Suddenly everything seemed possible. His energy and determination have continued to be invaluable.

Dariel Mayer’s distinctive styling elevates her work into the keepsake category. We are most grateful for all her thoughtful attentions.

Much appreciation to Debbie Patrick for carrying our book across the finish line. Her timely efforts have been essential to its completion.

Three families in particular deserve mention: the Hamiltons — including brother Sammy; the Calverts (“the three LLC’s”); and all the Stowers.

Teachers, mentors, and friends have also contributed to this: Clara Trythall, Mary Harrison, Cherie Toll Bottum, Stanley Field, Bobbe Siegel, Jenny Fanelli, Pam Burdette, and especially Judye Stowers Russell. I thank them all!
